Group D overview

Group D is the second of the co-host openers. The USA — under Mauricio Pochettino, appointed in September 2024 after the failed Gregg Berhalter era — open at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on 12 June against Paraguay. The Pochettino USMNT side has been built around Christian Pulisic (AC Milan), Weston McKennie (Juventus) and Tyler Adams (Bournemouth).

Paraguay return to the World Cup for the first time since 2010 under Gustavo Alfaro, who took charge in August 2024 and turned around a flagging qualifying campaign. They finished sixth in CONMEBOL, sneaking into the playoff and beating Bolivia.

Türkiye's first World Cup since their famous third-place finish in 2002. Vincenzo Montella's side brings Arda Güler (Real Madrid), Kenan Yıldız (Juventus), and Hakan Çalhanoğlu (Inter Milan). Australia under Tony Popovic at their sixth straight World Cup.

Standings outlook & knockout path

Most likely winner: USA (priced around 2.20). Home advantage plus the Pochettino tactical lift combine to make them group favourites despite Türkiye's superior individual talent.

Most likely runner-up: Türkiye. Güler/Yıldız/Çalhanoğlu midfield trio is the highest-quality unit in the group.

Best longshot for second: Australia. Souttar at centre-back, Mat Ryan in goal, and Popovic's set-piece focus make them competitive against any side in the group.

Paraguay third. Tactical organisation under Alfaro will earn one win, probably not two.
