About Leo
Leo grew up watching Bayern Munich under Ottmar Hitzfeld in the late 1990s — the era of Effenberg, Matthäus and Oliver Kahn — and went through a phase of supporting FC St Pauli in his early twenties that he is no longer embarrassed about. He started writing about football for German-language outlets in the mid-2010s, covering 2. Bundesliga first and the top flight after that, before moving into iGaming editorial in 2022 because the work paid better and the writing was, in some ways, more honest about what it was doing.
He reads German, English, Italian, and enough Dutch to follow KNVB press conferences without losing the plot. He has covered the last two World Cups, three Euros and the 2024 Olympics football tournament in some editorial capacity. Specialises in tactical analysis — the kind of writing where you actually explain what a manager is trying to do rather than describing what happened. The thing he finds most interesting about modern international football is how rare it has become for a national team's playing identity to differ meaningfully from the club football identity of its top six or seven players. The thing he finds most frustrating is when a tactical preview boils down to "they will line up in a 4-3-3."
Leo is based in Berlin — north of Schönhauser Allee, near Mauerpark — and writes most of his copy in long sessions at a café whose name he refuses to disclose on principle.
