Co-hosts and back-to-back qualifiers under American Jesse Marsch — Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David lead Canada's second consecutive World Cup after a 36-year absence broken in 2022

Canada at the World Cup 2026

Canada arrive at the 2026 World Cup as one of three co-hosts and the most-rising men's national side in CONCACAF over the past four years. The Qatar 2022 appearance ended a 36-year World Cup drought (their previous tournament had been Mexico 1986). The 2026 cycle has been overseen by American head coach Jesse Marsch, appointed in May 2024 after John Herdman's departure to club football.

Marsch inherited a squad with two genuine top-five-league stars — Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich) and Jonathan David (until summer 2025 at Lille, since at Juventus) — plus a deep CPL-and-MLS-based supporting cast. He has played a 4-3-3 with Davies at left-back rather than left wing, freeing Tajon Buchanan (until late 2025 at Inter Milan, since at Villarreal) to attack the right channel. Cyle Larin (Mallorca) and Jonathan David share the central striker role.

Stephen Eustáquio (Porto) anchors midfield. Atiba Hutchinson, who captained Canada at Qatar 2022, retired post-tournament; the armband has rotated through Davies, David and Eustáquio depending on availability. Goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau (LAFC) has been replaced as first-choice by NYCFC's Dayne St. Clair under Marsch.

Group B contains Bosnia and Herzegovina, Qatar and Switzerland. Canada are competing for second place behind Switzerland (favourites at 2.10). Their realistic ceiling is a Round of 32 win and a knockout match; the bottom is a group-stage exit. Outright tournament price 81.0 — among the longest of any North American host.

How Canada qualified for World Cup 2026

Canada qualified automatically as a co-host of the tournament. CONCACAF auto-qualified all three host nations (USA, Mexico, Canada) without participation in the formal qualifying campaign.

The Marsch era has produced uneven results. Highs: a Copa América 2024 semi-final run, eliminating Venezuela on penalties in the quarter-final before losing to Argentina 2-0. Lows: a 0-2 friendly defeat to Wales in October 2025, and a 1-3 Concacaf Nations League loss to Mexico in March 2025.

The Davies injury history is the central squad question heading into the tournament. He missed three months of the 2024-25 Bundesliga season with a knee injury and missed two of Canada's autumn 2025 friendlies. He is in the squad and is expected to start, but minute-management is likely across the group stage.

World Cup history

Canada have appeared at two previous World Cups — Mexico 1986 (lost all three group games, no goals scored) and Qatar 2022 (lost all three group games, two goals scored, including their first-ever World Cup goal by Davies). The 2026 appearance is the first time Canada have qualified for back-to-back tournaments. They have never won a World Cup match.

FAQ

Who is Canada's coach at World Cup 2026?

Jesse Marsch, the American head coach appointed in May 2024 after John Herdman's departure. Marsch previously managed RB Leipzig, Leeds United and RB Salzburg. The Canada role is his first national-team appointment, and he led the side to the Copa América 2024 semi-finals shortly after taking over.

Is Alphonso Davies in Canada's 2026 squad?

Yes. Davies is in the squad and is expected to start at left-back under Marsch's 4-3-3, despite a 2024-25 club season disrupted by a three-month knee injury at Bayern Munich. He scored Canada's first-ever World Cup goal at Qatar 2022.

Has Canada ever won a World Cup match?

No. Canada have lost all six of their World Cup matches across two tournament appearances (Mexico 1986 and Qatar 2022). The 2026 home tournament is widely seen as their best chance to claim a first-ever World Cup victory.

Did Canada qualify for World Cup 2026?

Yes — automatically, as one of three co-hosts alongside the USA and Mexico. CONCACAF host nations receive automatic qualification under FIFA rules. The Marsch-led campaign in the run-up therefore consisted of Concacaf Nations League, Gold Cup and Copa América matches plus friendlies.

What group is Canada in at World Cup 2026?

Group B alongside Bosnia and Herzegovina, Qatar and Switzerland. Canada are second favourites behind Switzerland to finish in the top two. They open against Bosnia at BMO Field Toronto on 12 June (a confirmed co-host opening fixture), then face Qatar on 18 June and conclude against Switzerland in their final group match.
